So why are we going?

In April 2008 Lee visited the Dominican Republic with a charity called Mission Direct, and had a very rewarding time working on projects to help people living in poverty.

In 2009 Lee and Hannah hope to return to the Dominican Republic and work on projects such as building homes, visiting hospitals, distributing aid and spending time with people in a different surrounding and culture.

Lee “I hope to re-visit the projects that I worked on back in April, and I can’t wait to see the completion of some of the homes that I helped out on.
For me, the best bit about the D.R. was the people, they are just so friendly and hospitable, and have so little, but just want to share it with you.
I am so looking forward to getting my hands dirty again!”

Hannah: “This will be a completely new experience for me, and something that I am both very excited and nervous about. I am looking forward to working on the various projects and hopefully will be able to incorporate some of my Occupational Therapy skills in a developing country.”

Why do the people of the Dominican Republic need our help?

Their houses are sticks and rubble that are the size of walk in wardrobes.

Their food is basic and meagre, Living conditions are cramped, dirty and unsanitary, but it is all the people can afford with incomes less than £1 per day. 

The work Mission Direct does in the Dominican Republic, supports the population of a slum village called Los Algodones (translated as Black Water), which is situated only 4 miles outside the tourist resort Puerto Plata.

Here the local people live with no water supply within 2 miles, without any toilets or sanitation and sewage runs through the streets.

The situation is desperate, children have no education and death comes early.

We would like to raise £3000, this will pay for us to go help the people of the Dominican Republic in building homes, giving out aid, spending time with people in the community, and taking some aid with us to give out.
